The Citizen is one of the original flagships brewed here at DC Brau and draws inspiration from the stronger ales made famous over the centuries by the Trappist and Abbey brewers of Belgium. Although the label denotes "Pale ale" this is mainly a reference to the color of the beer and not the bitterness of the beer as is commonly associated with American Pale Ales.
The Citizen leads in with a distinctively phelolic, bread-like nose with mild esters reminiscent of Apricot. Then after first sip transitions into a lively carbonation with traits of sweet, grainy, malt backed up by a spicy yeast character supported by a light, earthy hop character that is finished by a smooth, fruit-like sweetness that gently drifts over the imbibers palate. The addition of Dextrose during the last 15 minutes of the boil compliments the finish with a crisp dryness that helps to compliment the sweet finish and also adds some needed fermentables to help boost the final gravity or alcoholic strength of the overall beer.
